Angler casting in a clear Patagonian river with Andean peaks reflected in the water

Argentina

Patagonian Lake District, Argentina

Overview

About This Destination

Argentina's Patagonian lake district — centered on the towns of San Martín de los Andes, Junín de los Andes, and Bariloche — is the spiritual home of Southern Hemisphere fly fishing. Rivers like the Chimehuin, Malleo, Collon Cura, and Quilquihue hold large, wild rainbow and brown trout in gin-clear freestone water that drops from Andean lakes and winds through the dry steppe before emptying into the main drainages. This is technical fishing in an epic landscape.

Andean steppe, lenga beech forest, volcanic rock outcroppings, clear turquoise lakes, and wide freestone rivers braided across gravel flats beneath the Andes.
