Fast-flowing Great Lakes tributary river in autumn with steelhead in the current

Great Lakes Tributaries

Wisconsin & Michigan

Overview

About This Destination

When the inland seas of the Great Lakes begin to cool in autumn, something extraordinary happens in their tributary rivers: steelhead push up from the depths, chrome-bright and powerful, following ancient migratory instinct into the fast water of dozens of rivers in Wisconsin and Michigan. From October through April, these rivers offer some of the most physically demanding and emotionally rewarding fly fishing in North America.

Hardwood and conifer forests, fast-flowing freestone rivers over gravel and cobble, glacial lake terraces, and dramatic gorges carved by glacial meltwater.

  • Intimate, lesser-known rivers with minimal crowds
