Angler fighting a large sea trout on the Rio Grande in Tierra del Fuego at dusk

Tierra del Fuego

Isla Grande & Beagle Channel Tributaries, Argentina / Chile

Overview

About This Destination

At the very southern tip of South America, where the Andes plunge into the sea and the winds of the Drake Passage make every cast an act of will, the Rio Grande on Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego holds sea-run brown trout — sea trout — of extraordinary size. These are fish that have fed in the rich shallows of the South Atlantic and return each year to fresh water in chrome-bright condition, averaging 8–15 lbs and commonly exceeding 20. The Rio Grande is, quite simply, the world capital of sea-run brown trout.

Wind-swept Patagonian steppe, Subantarctic beech forest, the braided channels of the Rio Grande, the Beagle Channel with its backdrop of mountains, and the unrelenting southern wind that defines life at the end of the world.
